Pentamere Winery Lake Erie Chambourcin

It is Monday night in April and we have a great deal of new snow on the ground.  It started last night and lasted through about noon today. We Michiganders know and expect an April snowstorm so we are taking it in stride.

I chose this local Michigan wine for our dinner tonight. The label states that this wine is dubbed “Great Lakes Chianti” which is understandable because this drinks very much like an Italian table wine. Lots of oak on the nose and the finish with strawberry and cigar smoke on the palate. The texture is thin with an acidic quality. We purchased this wine locally at a winery in Tecumseh.

For dinner, I am baking a dish I’ll call “macaroni & cheese chicken & broccoli” bake. I started by stir-frying chicken and onions (I cup up chicken breasts in small chunks). In a separate sauce pan, I browned flour in butter and added milk and chicken broth (with cayenne pepper and paprika), then added cheese to melt (and a dab of spicy mustard). Then, combined everything with cooked pasta and broccoli and put it in the oven to bake.

Tomorrow is supposed to be cold and wintry, too. Another good night to plan a cozy meal and cuddle up and stay warm.

Catena Cabernet Sauvignon (2003)

catena-cabernet-sauvignon-2003It is February 28 and Open Your Bottle Night. Woo hoo! We’ve been looking forward to this. We have two special bottles in our possession that we didn’t choose tonight: 1) A bottle of wine from our two sons, Tommy and Tony (we don’t want to open it until Tony is back from South Korea and we are all together), and 2) a bottle of wine from Tommy’s girlfriend, Amanda, which we don’t want to open unless Amanda is here with us to enjoy it too. So we settled on this Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 from the Mendoza region of Argentina. I bought this wine for Tom for Christmas in 2007 and it, along with the other bottles I purchased, have been stored in our cool, dark basement.

In the glass, this Catena is a deep, dark-violet color with reddish hues. The nose is intense;  focused aromas of ripe raspberries and blackberries intermingled with notes of tobacco and pencil lead. The mouthfeel is muscular, full and concentrated bursting with rich blackberry and espresso. This was a great choice for Open Your Bottle Night with just the two of us. (Of course, we would have chosen something different if our boys were home, but that day will come.) I think our new cyber friends, Marty and Jeannie, would like this wine.

For dinner tonight, I had to rummage through my refrigerator and freezer. I did not go to the grocery store today because . . . well, because I went for a long run (9-miles) this morning in 14-degree weather and it was cold, which takes the wind out of your sails . . . then, after a hot shower and a little lunch, it was time for me to go to a baby shower for a friend of mine from work. By the time I got home, the day was over. So, I took some Polish kielbasa out of the freezer and some cabbage, carrots and onions out of the vegetable drawer. I started by browning the sliced kielbasa in hot olive oil until it was very brown; then, I added sliced onions and stirred those around until they, too, were brown, then added a boatload of chopped cabbage, sliced carrots and some chicken broth. It is now simmering and I am making mashed potatoes for the side. It should be a comforting, filling meal for our last day of February. Spring is near! Cheers!

Bogle Merlot (2006)

bogle-merlot-2006Tom and I returned tonight from Arden, North Carolina, where we visited his sister Pat and her husband Bob in their home in the mountains. Tom’s parents Joe and Mary from Florida and younger brother Steve and his wife Janet and their daughters Emily and Katie from Virginia were also there. Trigger accompanied us and happily cavorted with her much-larger canine cousins Molly and Bella, a Goldendoodle and a Labradoodle.

We ate lavish meals and drank wonderful red wines from Argentina, California, Chile, North Carolina, and Virginia. We toured nearby Ashville, North Carolina, and loved it.

This Bogle Merlot 2006 is part of a collection of wine that was a gift from Tom’s parents. It’s a lovely, soft merlot, with hints of vanilla and caramel.

As we relax after our 11-hour drive home today, we are thinking about our family and loving the memories.

Deepwater Point (2007)

deepwater-point-zinfandel-2007This California Deepwater Point Zinfandel arrived today in a wine club shipment. Tom chose it for our Friday night to accompany a dinner of spaghetti with meat sauce and sauteed spinach. This is quite a spectacular full-bodied wine showing richness and depth with structured tannins. The taste has hints of strawberries and vanilla with pepper and cloves on the finish.
I am so glad it is Friday!

Razor’s Edge Shiraz

razors-edge-shirazEarlier in the week I had the pleasure of dining with four fellow members of the NCAA Research Committee while attending the annual meeting in San Diego. I promised them I would blog about our wine.

Katie, Roxanne, Kurt, and Bruce, this is for you!

The five of us headed out together in search of dinner in the Gaslamp district of downtown San Diego. After stopping and browsing at several restaurant menus, we settled on the Asti Ristorante on Fifth Avenue. I think the offer of a free dessert helped us make our decision. (It’s not easy committing to one place with five different people saying “Anywhere is fine with me!” We were a flexible and agreeable group.)

As we were getting ready to walk in, Katie noticed Dick Vitale. We all got a good look and, sure enough, he was right there eating outside on the sidewalk seating area. So we knew it must be a good restaurant.

The three red-wine drinkers in the group chose the Razor’s Edge Shiraz because none of us had had it and the price for a bottle was reasonable.  We all enjoyed it. It was very fruity on the palate with good structure. I noted a touch of pepper and vanilla on the finish.

We all had delicious dinners. Three of us, including myself, had fresh crab linguine. Quite yummy. But the dinner was not the best part of the meal. The best part was the company of these fun and intelligent new friends. Cheers!

Red Knot Cabernet Sauvignon (2007)

I purchased this South Australian Red Knot Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 yesterday during a Sam’s Club shopping spree. I was coming home from a football game and had a list of things I needed. Natch, I had to browse the wine isle. Tom wasn’t with me so I was really struggling with a full cart of heavy items plus humongous paper-goods packages (toilet paper and what-not). But I managed to slide some bottles in the crevices of my cart! I actually purchased two of these and I am glad I did.

This is extremely smooth and velvety in the mouth with intense flavors of blackberries and cherries. On the finish is chocolate. The tannins are soft and mild; I enjoy firmer tannins, but this is a nice change of pace.

For dinner, I have cut up two steaks (that I purchased on sale at Krogers) and those chunks are marinating in olive oil and seasoning. I will stir fry the steak with fresh asparagus, tomatoes & green onions freshly picked from my garden. I will serve this over some Barilla penne pasta. I have enough for four, in case our son Tommy and his girlfriend Amanda join us. We think they might so I am prepared.

I just asked Tom what he thought of this wine . . . I am quoting: “I would say that this is a very rich, chocolately, tannic Cabernet.” Oh, Tommy and Amanda have just arrived! Time to sign off. Cheers everyone!

Grevin California Cabernet Franc

It is Saturday night and Tom is in West Virginia at a reunion with his graduate-school buddies. I am enjoying the company of my son, Tony, who is home briefly before he leaves for South Korea for a new job. I have pork chops on the grill, brown rice steaming, fresh green beans sauteeing and a salad ready to toss (mostly from the garden). This wine is good. We opened it last night and it was a bit tight and needed some decanting. Tonight it is quite delicious. Time to turn the chops. . .cheers!

Della Flora Zinfandel (2006)

Della Flora Zinfandel 2006

It is Friday night and we are glad! It’s been a long, demanding week.

Tonight, I chose this Della Flora Zinfandel 2006 to accompany our dinner of leftover soup and bread. The nose is exuberant with a generous amount of fruit. In the mouth are elaborate flavors of plum, blackberry and cherries. Mmmm, this is delicious. I love a big red and this is big but very different than our usual Cabernet Sauvignons. This is fruitier but very strong tasting and dry.

Sibaritismo Tempranillo (2005)

Sibaritismo Tempranillo 2005Sibaritismo Tempranillo 2005 is a lovely ruby red in the glass. The nose has a blend of berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather and earthy spices. It has a distinct leather quality on the palate. This is a food-friendly big red.

I looked back at my previous wine notes and, interestingly, I chose this wine for a similar meal the last time we had it. I am making chicken, brown rice and a salad for dinner tonight and that is what I had the last time we had this wine. I guess I subconsciously have decided that tempranillo is a good accompaniment to chicken and rice. And, it makes sense. The taste of tempranillo is bigger than the chicken and rice but it adds just the right amount of pizzaz to the meal. Yummy. . .

Jean Descombes Morgon Beaujolais 2005

Jean Descombes Morgon Beaujolais 2005This Jean Descombes Morgon Beaujolais 2005 is good and surprisingly different tasting. Morgon is the name of one of the ten Beaujolais crus, or villages, each of which has its own appellation contrôlée. (The Beaujolais from the ten crus are a level of quality above Beaujolais-Villages, which in turn is a level above basic Beaujolais.)

This Morgon Beaujolais has a very strong taste of strawberry, a surprise that almost makes it seem like a dessert wine. It’s quite good and intriguing. It will be interesting to try other Beaujolais crus to see if they have a similar taste.
