Il Papavero

We have had this Italian red table wine, Il Papavero, before and really enjoyed it. This is delightful; a juicy cherry-flavored  quaff; dark and spicy with ripe fruit and chocolate.

For dinner tonight, I am making baked, spicy chicken, steamed brown rice and vegetables. I also baked some brownies with chopped walnuts. Tom was craving my brownies. . .

We both had busy weeks. Tom was in Montreal on business and I was up north to see my folks and to watch our son, Tommy, play his bass guitar in The Ben Daniels Band at “The Loading Dock” in Traverse City. My 77-year-old mother came with me to the bar; the band started playing at 11:00 p.m. and my mom was as lively as can be. What fun!

I am missing our youngest son, Tony. Hurry home, Tones!

Le Grand Noir Cabernet-Shiraz (2006)

I discovered this French blend Le Grand Noir Cabernet-Shiraz at our local market in town. I stopped in today to pick up a fresh chicken for dinner and the owner recommended this wine to me. I am really enjoying this wine. The nose is both spicey and earthy. The taste is great — fruity with some black dirt — nice finish. Really lovely. I will definitely buy this again.

For dinner, I have baked chicken in the oven, along with baked potatoes. I picked lettuce and little green onions from the garden and will make a fresh salad. Tommy just arrived to join us for dinner so I need to go add the final touches. Cheers!

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet (2007)

It is Sunday evening and we have had a beautiful spring day in Michigan. I think we saw every, single person under the age of 12 in our neighborhood today — either on a scooter, a bike or bouncing a ball. We Michiganders sure do love the first snow-free, semi-warm day! (I also saw my first robin — a sure sign of spring!)

We are finishing this bottle of Penfolds Shiraz Cabernet from Australia tonight. This is the kind of wine that put Australia wines on the map. Deep red in the glass with pomegranate,  spice, dried cranberries and a bit of wood. Luscious and fruity, the tannins are firm. This is just an easy-to-drink, very enjoyable, lush red wine.

We are going to have a pot of homemade soup and a loaf of home-made bread tonight. Just a simple Sunday-night dinner. Cheers!

Granrojo Rojo (2007)

rojo-2007Oh boy, Friday has arrived! It is cold February night in Michigan and the forecast is for an even colder weekend. We are snuggled in for the evening — listening to music and reading the paper.

I chose this Granrojo Rojo 2007, a Spanish blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, to go with our dinner of spaghetti bolognese, fresh-steamed spinach and a salad.

This is a very pleasant wine. It doesn’t make me swoon like some wines do, but this is quite delightful, nonetheless. This vintage is young and fresh, with bountiful cherries on the nose and palate. The wine is light bodied with a fresh and minty finish.

This post was interrupted briefly with a Skype call from our son, Tony, who is in South Korea. It was so good to see him and talk to him. He is just as cute and sweet as ever.

Time to finish preparing dinner. Here’s to a great weekend, everyone. Cheers!

Luzon Jumilla Spain (2007)

luzon-jumilla-2007I stopped at the Plum Market in Ann Arbor on my way home from work tonight. I bought one large bag of groceries, mostly produce. But, of course, I slithered by the wine aisles to see what looked interesting. I bought two bottles, one of which we are tasting tonight.

This Spanish beauty Luzon Jumilla 2007 is 65% Monastrell and 35% Syrah. The color is inky with a violet rim. The aroma is spice and cherries with a bit of freshly ground peppercorns. The taste is refreshing and crisp, bursting with cranberries, plums, and mild spice. The tannins are subtle  but balanced. The finish is a curious combination of spice, tobacco, and thyme. This is quite a find! It was on sale at the Plum Market for $6.97. (I also purchased a $40 bottle on sale for $19; can’t wait to try it!)

For dinner tonight, I made a dinner from the groceries I picked up at the market: a steak stir fry with steak, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes (marinated in olive oil, cracked salt, and pepper), served over penne pasta and fresh beets, which I steamed for one hour (during cocktail hour, natch). It was delicious! Now, I am waiting for our son Tommy to come and eat the leftovers! He usually does a pretty thorough job! :)

Volteo Tempranillo Shiraz 2006

volteo-tempranillo-shiraz-2006It is Saturday night and very cold and snowy in Michigan. We are having a glass of this Volteo Tempranillo Shiraz 2006, which is delicious and will taste perfect with our dinner.

This is a Spanish wine.  Tempranillo is the primary grape used in Rioja, a well-known wine growing region in Spain. The nose is strawberry jam and vanilla. It is  medium-bodied on the palate with sour cherry and raspberries. The finish is so good: Coffee and chocolate, cloves, iron, and dirt.  The acidity adds just the right amount of bite.

This wine is a perfect choice for our dinner. I started with chicken drumsticks and thighs, which I soaked in a brine of saltwater for about 1 hour. Then I drained and patted dry. I seasoned heavily with salt and freshly-ground pepper and drizzled with olive oil. I then chopped three cloves of garlic and added to the chicken along with some freshly-chopped parsley. That marinated a while and then I threw everything into a hot cast-iron skillet to brown. After it was brown and crispy, I covered and let the chicken cook until falling-off-the-bone tender.

Meanwhile I prepared an apple cobbler for dessert by peeling and slicing apples and then adding a topping of butter, applesauce, brown sugar, flour, and lots of oatmeal, and baking for 30 minutes.

Now I need to finish the dinner with mashed potatoes and a salad of romaine lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and cucumbers with my homemade salad dressing (olive oil, balsamic and red wine vinegar, grey poupon mustard, basil, oregano, rosemary, savory, and thyme).

This morning I woke from a dream about my youngest son, Tony, and I have been thinking about him all day. Love you, Tony!

Claude Val Vendanges Vin De Pays D’oc (2006)

claude-val-vendanges-2006-vin-de-pays-docIt is a cold Sunday night in Michigan. We are sitting here with a glass of wine, Enya on the Bose, Trigger on my lap, a pot of homemade soup on the stove and a loaf of bread in the oven. Does life get any better? Even in the deep, dark Michigan cold, I feel happy and cozy and blessed!

Tom chose this Claude Val Vendanges Vin de Pays d’Oc 2006 tonight. I think it is fabulous. We think we bought this on a trip up North to see my folks — at a place called “The Blue Goat” in Traverse City. Wow, yummy. I really, really like this one. In the glass, it is not our usual blackish red, but rather a pale purple. On the nose is the scent of cloves and honeysuckle. On the palate, I taste peaches, strawberries and roses. The feel is round in the mouth with structured tannins.

If we don’t finish this tonight, it will definitely be what I choose to have tomorrow! Cheers!

Tubul Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot (2007)

tubul-cabernet-sauvignon-merlot-2007We already blogged about this wine last night but we are finishing the  bottle tonight. It is Monday night after our break and it is a back-to-work week. It was a hectic but productive day at the office.

This wine is delicious and because I blogged about it last night I won’t go into great detail except to say that it is a full-bodied and fruity with a long finish.

For dinner, I browned boneless pork loin chops in my cast-iron skillet and then added a thickened sauce of chicken broth and mushrooms. It will simmer for about 90 minutes until very tender. I am going to serve this with mashed potatoes and green beans. Should be a pretty yummy meal to start our busy week.  Cheers and welcome to 2009.

Tubul Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot (2007)

tubul-cabernet-sauvignon-merlot-2007We are having a bottle of this Tubul Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2007, a Chilean blend, for our Sunday night cocktail hour.  It has been an icy day in Michigan, with gray skies and slippery footing.  Tom & I did some major grocery shopping today — really stocking up on meats for the freezer and other groceries.

So, I spent several hours in the kitchen repackaging foods. Then, I got a little carried away and cleaned out cupboards and drawers in the kitchen. I also got rid of old, tupperware cannisters that I have had for years, putting my flour, sugar, etc., into clear, Rubbermaid containers. Now, they take up less room and I can see what I have. Oh, the joy of having clean cupboards and drawers in my kitchen! I can’t wait to get out there and make dinner!

I am going to make what I call a chicken stir fry for dinner tonight with cut-up chicken breasts, vegetables and pasta. As such, Tom suggested a Merlot for our wine but I must have made a discouraging sound because he put that back and got this one instead. :) This is delicious. Everything is right about this wine. . .the color is violet in the glass;  the nose is grassy; the taste is burnt toast, chocolate and dried apricots. And, finally, the tannins are firm, making this a big and beautiful end-of-the-weekend quaff.  Back to work tomorrow after a lovely, lengthy holiday break. . .

Belezos Rioja (2005)

belezos-rioja-2005This Belezos Rioja 2005 from Spain is our choice for this snowy Friday night in Michigan. We have at least 11″ of new snow today. What a storm! It was beautiful. All the schools were closed. I went out later in the afternoon and the roads were slippery, snow covered and treacherous.

We purchased this wine up north in Traverse City at “The Blue Goat” for $11.99. In the glass, this is lovely red and violet. On the nose is cinnamon, strawberries and flowers. The taste is full of fruit and licorice.

For dinner tonight, I have a loaf of whole wheat bread in the oven. (Anytime I can be home, I love to make bread.) I have a skillet of beef stew on the stove. I’ll make some green beans and it should be a fragrant and cozy meal.

I talked to Tony tonight on Skype. Happy day!
