RJR North Coast Syrah (2007)

It is a Thursday, warm September evening in Michigan. I was home all day trying to recuperate from some kind of heavy-duty respiratory guck. I couldn’t summon any energy to go to work. . .my voice sounds like a duck. I guess I am sick.

Nonetheless, life goes on and that means cocktail hour and dinner at the Werner house! I had already pre-made a meatloaf this weekend and it was just waiting in my refrigerator to bake. . .which is what it is doing, along with a couple of potatoes and a handful of beets that I picked from my garden and wrapped in foil. I also picked tomatoes, lettuce and onions from my garden for a salad. So, everything is almost ready as we finish a glass of this delicious California syrah. With my cold, I can’t give a good description of the nose, but the taste is coming through even with my compromised taste buds. This is plummy with a peppery finish and smooth tannins. This is the right wine for our meatloaf dinner tonight.

Meanwhile, as an aside, I am so excited to learn that our son, Tony, will be coming home from South Korea on October 1. I am still waiting for the exact itinerary, but meanwhile, I have researched and located a recipe for kimchee, which has become one of Tony’s favorite foods. Now I just need to buy the ingredients and start practicing!
