Razor’s Edge Shiraz

razors-edge-shirazEarlier in the week I had the pleasure of dining with four fellow members of the NCAA Research Committee while attending the annual meeting in San Diego. I promised them I would blog about our wine.

Katie, Roxanne, Kurt, and Bruce, this is for you!

The five of us headed out together in search of dinner in the Gaslamp district of downtown San Diego. After stopping and browsing at several restaurant menus, we settled on the Asti Ristorante on Fifth Avenue. I think the offer of a free dessert helped us make our decision. (It’s not easy committing to one place with five different people saying “Anywhere is fine with me!” We were a flexible and agreeable group.)

As we were getting ready to walk in, Katie noticed Dick Vitale. We all got a good look and, sure enough, he was right there eating outside on the sidewalk seating area. So we knew it must be a good restaurant.

The three red-wine drinkers in the group chose the Razor’s Edge Shiraz because none of us had had it and the price for a bottle was reasonable.  We all enjoyed it. It was very fruity on the palate with good structure. I noted a touch of pepper and vanilla on the finish.

We all had delicious dinners. Three of us, including myself, had fresh crab linguine. Quite yummy. But the dinner was not the best part of the meal. The best part was the company of these fun and intelligent new friends. Cheers!

Three Buck Chuck Cabernet Sauvignon (2006)

charles-shaw-cabernet-sauvignon-2006Melody is on the road and she will be hoping two things: (1) that I blog and (2) that I drink our Three Buck Chuck while she’s gone. So I’m doing both.

Melody finds the idea of Three Buck Chuck a little too, shall we say, basic. However I find this Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 to be a perfectly fine table wine.

It’s on the fruity side (maybe strawberries), but it has some tannins and is tasty and fun. It went well with my leftover steak-and-brown-rice stirfry.

It’s hard to imagine a better wine buy for three dollars.

(By the way, I’ve read that the year doesn’t matter with a Charles Shaw because it doesn’t vary year to year. But no matter, I still say it’s not bad at all.)

La Ferme Julien Côtes Du Ventoux (2006)

la-ferme-julien-cotes-du-ventoux-2006I am finishing the bottle of this La Ferme Julien Côtes Du Ventoux 2006, a French blend, tonight. This red is a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, and 15% Cinsault. I already blogged about this last night but I wanted to add my comments for the second night after it had spent some time breathing. (You can see my comments last night when it was freshly uncorked.)

In the glass it is dark violet. On the nose are scents of berries, spice, and pepper. This is full-bodied, fruit-filled wine with plenty of bright fruit and spice. This is one of the wines that Tom bought at Trader Joe’s for a very reasonable price; this is an excellent value. I would purchase this again in a minute.

I have leftovers in the oven because I have so many! Tonight is leftover potatoes and carrots (from the pot roast dinner) and leftover ribs (from last night). I have also made a fresh salad.

La Ferme Julien Côtes Du Ventoux (2006)

la-ferme-julien-cotes-du-ventoux-2006Tom chose this La Ferme Julien Côtes Du Ventoux 2006 from France for this Sunday evening. This red is a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, and 15% Cinsault. Fairly low in tannin, Cinsault is grown abundantly in France and used to blend with other grapes. The Cinsault has great perfume and supple texture and is often used to offset the harshness of the Carignan.

We have had a good weekend and tonight we can hear sleet hitting the windows. Winter has arrived in Michigan. For dinner I am preparing two slabs of pork ribs. I started by mixing a rub of chili powder, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper on the ribs and letting them rest for an hour on the counter. Then I covered them with foil and put them in the oven at 300 for an hour; then took off the foil for an hour. Then I prepared my own barbecue sauce by sauteing onions and garlic and adding chili powder, cayenne pepper, catsup, molasses, cider vinegar, spicy mustard, and worcestershire sauce . . . and then I smothered the ribs in the sauce and put them back in the oven and that is where they are now. They need to continue to cook for an hour and half. So by the time they are done they will be succulent and tender. The ribs have been an all-afternoon undertaking — very fun, comforting, and cozy.

This wine is perfect for tonight’s dinner.

Slide Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (2005)

slide-mountain-cabernet-sauvignon-2005I chose this Slide Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 from California for our Saturday night. I can’t wait to describe it because it is soooo wonderful! I had a hunch I was going to love it.

The nose is fruit and spice. The color is very deep, dark red. The taste is full of intense fruit. The finish is peppery with very smooth tannins. I love this! This is ranking right up there with my absolute favorite red wines.

As I write this, Trigger is on my lap. She had an active day and was outside quite a bit. For dinner I have a pot roast in the oven. I started with a shoulder roast and browned it in a hot cast-iron skillet. Then I moved it into a low-temperature oven (250). After 90 minutes I added potatoes and carrots and beef broth. I also baked a loaf of whole-wheat bread, which is cooling on the counter. I will make some green beans too.

Time to check on dinner. But meanwhile, let me assure you that this wine is absolutely exquisite!

Barrio La Boca Malbec (2007)

barrio-la-boca-malbec-2007It’s been awhile since we have had this Barrio La Boca Malbec. This is our first taste of the 2007. Tom bought this at his recent outing to Trader Joe’s in Ann Arbor. It is Friday night and we are relaxing and will have our usual late-night dinner.

This wine has a delicate, but slightly astringent nose. On the palate is fruit and nutmeg with healthy tannins. The finish has plums, vanilla, and chocolate. What a value! I don’t know the exact price but I know it was well under $10.

For dinner tonight I am marinating steak, which I have cut into chunks. I am steaming brown rice. Soon I will stir-fry the steak and add broccoli, fresh tomatoes, and green onions from my garden. I’ll mix it all together and voila!

Cheers!

Abrazo Del Toro Cariñena (2007)

abrazo-del-toro-carinena-2007Tom took a rare mid-week trip into Ann Arbor for an appointment and made a point to stop at Trader Joe’s for some serious wine shopping. When I came home from work, I was delighted to see he had purchased 13 bottles of wine (and two loaves of sourdough bread). This is one of his finds.

Very reasonably priced at $6.99, this Abrazo Del Toro Cariñena 2007 is a Spanish wine that is quite nice. It is always tempting to judge a wine by its price (and I have a propensity for assuming the higher the price, the better the wine), but I aim to be objective–so, here it is. The nose is subtle. There just isn’t much in the way of aromas here. Yet while the bouquet is modest, it is entirely pleasant. The taste is also quite subtle but charming with hints of dark chocolate.

One might describe this as a bit thin but I think it is an excellent mid-week quaff. For dinner tonight I am making a skillet of goulash. I have a great recipe (my own) that is so yummy (definitely comfort food). I will also steam spinach. And maybe a piece of that sourdough bread that Tom brought home from Trader Joe’s. A comforting wine and a comforting dinner for a Thursday night. Cheers!

Opera Prima Cabernet Sauvignon (2007)

opera-prima-cabernet-sauvignon-2007We purchased this Opera Prima Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 up north in Traverse City (at the Blue Goat) when we were visiting my parents. This was the most inexpensive wine we purchased — on sale for $3.99!

In the glass it is a deep cherry red. The taste is fruity with raspberry and smoke. This is a full-bodied wine with a long finish.

I taught a night class tonight so we are going to have leftover chili from last night (and the leftover whole-wheat bread that I baked yesterday).

This is a decent red wine. For the price, it’s pretty impressive.

Crios De Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza (2006)

I purchased this wine on the recommendation of my new wine consultant from a wine club to which we belong! Nice job, Cathy!! This Crios De Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 from Mendoza, Argentina is fabulous. As soon as I poured the wine into my glass, I knew it was going to be wonderful. The nose is pine needles and spice. The palate shows richly-textured plum flavors with undertones of dark chocolate and some vanilla-scented oak. The silky tannins give the wine beautiful structure and an amazingly long finish.

It is Sunday evening and I have a loaf of whole-wheat bread rising on the counter and a pot of chili on the stove. I made my chili with ground beef, onions, garlic, and lots of beans, tomatoes, and spices. It smells very good.

We had an active day with quite a bit of time outside working in the yard. Tomorrow is back to work so we are relishing our evening.

If anyone wants a good wine consultant, let me know! I’ll pass along Cathy’s name and email address.

Kíona Washington State Proprietary Blend (2002)

I ordered this Kíona Washington State Proprietary Blend 2002 as part of a case of reds. This one was on sale for R9.99. It’s made from 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc.

It’s an interesting tasting wine and it is growing more complex as it breathes. The nose is reminiscent of tree sap with spice.  The taste is very fruity with cherries and raspberries. The tannins are firm and the finish is very long. We are very much enjoying this Washington State wine.

It is a Saturday evening and we have had an active day. I started my day with an 8-mile run and I also worked in the yard, did laundry, and took Trigger for a couple of long walks. (It was a gorgeous autumn day in Michigan.) I am roasting a fresh chicken that I purchased from a local farmer. I also made a fresh apple cobbler from an old recipe that I have had for years (the crunchy part is made with oatmeal). So dinner is smelling pretty yummy and I think this wine was a good choice for roasted chicken.

Our son Tommy is working tonight so it is just the three of us (if you include Trigger). I’m looking forward to Tuesday. I want to watch TV all night!!
